Vineyard Lutheran School is governed by Lutheran Education SA NT and WA (LESNW) in conjunction with the Association of Independent Schools of South Australia (AISSA) who directly follow The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).
ACARA is the independent statutory authority responsible for the development of a national curriculum, a national assessment program, and a national data collection and reporting program that supports learning for Australian students.
Our curriculum focuses strongly on literacy and numeracy while also providing rich and deep learning experiences in all other curriculum areas. Specialist areas include music and performing arts, a second language and physical education.
We also provide substantial extra support for students identified with learning needs, both gifted and those challenged by learning difficulties. Our strength lies in the time, care and consideration we give to Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) and catering to the specific needs of every individual child.
Recently teaching staff have been having additional training in “The Big Write” which is a methodology for raising the standards in writing across all ages and ability levels. Known as VCOP – Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation. Designed to bring the fun back into writing it makes the children want to write and to be continuously challenged throughout the writing journey.
Vineyard Lutheran School offers children the opportunity to gain their education in a caring and supportive Christian environment. We have devotion and weekly Christian Studies lessons. We value diversity and respect other’s beliefs and cultures. Our school offers strong pastoral support and care.
Students at the Vineyard Lutheran School in Clare are excited to present to the community their new ‘Open Learning Centre’ which has recently been completed.
We are all delighted to be using these modern facilities for our learning which is obvious to all who pass the school with a positive road presence, private play space and beautiful view.
The new Open Learning Centre boasts three learning areas. It houses the Senior Primary School year six and seven and year three four and five classrooms plus a ‘Covered Outdoor Learning Area’ which can be a stage in the morning, a place to read at midday and a cricket pitch in the afternoon.
This new building enables the delivery of a changing and dynamic curriculum through indoor and outdoor spaces. It focuses on the goal to develop the learning environment, infrastructure and grounds to ensure the provision of safe and stimulating spaces that enhance the community view of the school.
Inside the new classrooms space is provided for inquiry teaching (hands on and collaborative learning), break out spaces for small groups and individuals, strong connection between outdoor and indoor learning, opportunity for nature play and agile furnishings so rooms can be configured according to student purpose and preferences.
Christian Studies is a program of study about the Christian faith as taught by the Lutheran Church of Australia. Like all academic forms of learning, its purpose is to inform the students and to help them develop their understanding of life and the world in which they live. Overarching topics included in the Christian Studies curriculum are Christian beliefs, Christian living, the Christian Church and Christianity in the World. As part of the program of the school, Christian Studies allows students to engage in critical enquiry by expressing their views and by exploring the beliefs of others in an atmosphere of openness.
The academic function of Christian Studies is not its only purpose. Through Christian Studies, students are exposed to the living Word of God. The Holy Spirit works through this Word to create faith. While we can neither predict the measure of the response in individuals to the Word of God in Christian Studies, expressions of faith will be nurtured, informed, invited, but not expected.
Students will study the English language, how it works, and how to use it effectively. The study of English plays a vital role in the development of student’s literacy, enhances their learning in all areas of the curriculum, and provides them with the communication skills and critical understanding of language necessary for active participation in society. The aims of the program will be to enable students to speak, listen, view, write and read with purpose with knowledge of the ways language varies according to context, and a sound grasp of standard Australian English.
Students will learn to use ideas about numbers, space, measurement, chance, data handling and algebra. They will explore mathematical ways of representing patterns and relationships to describe, interpret and reason about their social and physical world. The program involves the learner in activities which will develop an appreciation of mathematics as relevant and enjoyable, as well as a sound base to engage in future study in various disciplines.
All of our teachers have been trained in M-LATS, a mathematical program which is constructivist in nature and which intentionally seeks to develop teacher’s own knowledge and understanding of mathematics and numeracy, of how students learn mathematics and develop numeracy, and give them the opportunity to develop a range of strategies to support learning in a range of educational settings.
In the Arts program the student will develop creative skills, critical appreciation and knowledge of artistic techniques and technologies in dance, drama, music, visual arts and multi-arts productions. The Arts develop a student’s sense of personal and cultural identity and equips them for a life-long involvement in the appreciation of the Arts.
History & Geography
The subject formally known as SOSE (Studies of Society and Environment) is now split into History & Geography.
Students will come to an understanding of how individuals and groups live together and interact with their environment. Students develop a respect for cultural heritage and a commitment to social justice, the democratic process and ecological sustainability. They will acquire a sound knowledge in the areas of history, geography, culture, the environment and conservation, as well as skills of social living, citizenship and the desire to apply them in society.
In the Science learning area students learn to investigate, understand and describe the physical, biological and technological world and value the systems and processes that support life on our planet. Science helps students to become critical thinkers who use evidence to construct conclusions.
Languages other than
Vineyard offers German as its LOTE language. In languages other than English, students learn to communicate effectively in another language, and to further develop their skills and understanding in English. They gain an understanding of other societies, the ability to interact with people and cultures other than their own and practical skills which they can use in future social, cultural and vocational areas.
Health and Physical Education provides students with an understanding of health issues and the skills needed for confident participation in sport and recreational activities. It enables students to make responsible decisions about health and physical activity and to promote their own and others’ health and well-being.
In the Design and Technology learning area, students engage in three main activities; designing, making and critiquing. It is under this broad learning area in which the following learning experiences fall. Agriculture and Gardening; Food and Cooking; Construction and Information and Communications. Students will acquire the skills unique to each Design and Technology subject.
